20th Century Fox action film shot in Southern Thailand
Back to TextWWE Studios came to us with the hard hitting and explosive sequel to "The Marine". The entire movie was to be shot in Thailand and the main location had to be a tropical luxury seaside resort. These are normally not hard to find, but if you have Brian Cox, one of Australia's most famous SFX Supervisors (The Matrix) on your crew and the script includes blowing the resort to smithereens, then the line of eager resort candidates tends to thin dramatically. We were not to be deterred and finally found the perfect setting in Phuket.
The Adamas Resort & Spa, which lies secluded in a beautiful bay on the Andaman Sea surrounded by jungle covered mountains, finally gave in to our request after many long days of negotiations. Thank you very much to the resort for that. In the end, it was a win-win situation for both the filmmakers and the resort... and despite having staged serious pyrotechnics on their resort grounds… we are, in fact, invited back anytime!
It was a furious production – 24 shooting days with lots of special effects and stunts. Roel Reine, the Dutch director, had great ambitions for his movie and his enthusiasm and gung-ho attitude was contagious enough that we ended up averaging an unbelievable 65 set-ups per day. Still, we managed to come in under budget and exactly on schedule with loads of great looking material to show for our efforts.
At wrap the Thai crew (and the crew was all Thai except for a few well-chosen positions,) was exhausted. But the crew was also proud of what we accomplished… perhaps even setting a new bar for level of production value possible when shooting a lower budget feature film in Thailand.
