The Cave

A Dutch thriller shot on the Thai/ Burmese border

Back to Text

Living Films joined with Get Reel Productions of the Netherlands, to shoot the Thailand portion of their film "The Cave" from November to December 2000. The film also shot in Holland, Belgium and Canada. The film was directed by Martin Koolhoven.

The story takes us back twenty years as ittraces the intertwined lives of three people: a geologist, a con-man and a Canadian jeweler. The story evolves into a psychological thriller about evil and fate and both starts and ends with intriguing and suspenseful scenes shot in Thailand.

The story is based on the English novel of the same name by the acclaimed Belgian author Tim Krabbe who previously wrote "The Golden Egg". This was made into the Dutch film "Spoorloos" and then remade by 20th Century Fox as "The Vanishing."

Filming of "The Cave" took place in Mae Sot on the Thai-Burmese border. We were the first production company to bring an international feature to Mae Sot which added a fresh and realistic feeling to the footage.

The Cave's producer, Amsterdam-based Get Reel Productions, produces films in Dutch and English. It is a co-producer of the Belgian film "Everyone Famous!", which played at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2000.

The Cave was released throughout Europe in September 2001.
