A low budget German feature shot entirely on location in Thailand
Back to TextBetween August and December 2005, Living Films took on the ultra-low budget German feature film called "Paperbird" (originally under the working title "Toy".) With only 45 on-set crew, shot on Super-16 at more than 40 different locations around Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Bangkok, the 105-minutes feature was a very ambitious project that we are proud to say, came in on schedule and on budget.
Director Vanessa van Houten and DOP Philipp Kirsamer strove to tell the story through moods created by neon lights, shadows and the patina of aged Chinese shops and warehouses found in the old parts of Chiang Mai and Bangkok's Chinatown. The interior of a massage parlor was re-created in a studio with the decoration inspired by a set in Wong Kar Wai's masterpiece "In the Mood for Love". A significant portion of filming also took place on location in a Lahu hilltribe village in Northern Thailand.
The film stars Thomas Fraenzel, Tschagsalma Borchu and Lars Rudolph. The story is about an essentric young German named Nic who wanders through Bangkok like a male Alice in Wonderland. He is pulled into a world and culture unknown to him. He meets Coco, a mysterious prostitute and a hopeless love story begins. Nic also meets a charismatic Aids-stricken German called Charlie. Nic follows him into the ambivalence of a dark Bangkok.
Toy was produced by Dor Film West Productions with producer Danny Krausz, in Co-production with Bavarian Broadcasting (BR), the Film University of Munich, line producer Alfred Deutsch and the Living Films crew.
