Matt Dillon’s directorial debut shot in Thailand and Cambodia
Back to TextCity of Ghosts was shot in thailand and cambodia from january to april, 2001. the film marked the directing debut for matt dillon who also co-wrote and starred in the film.
living films was the sole coordinating company involved in the production of city of ghosts in thailand. living films meanwhile provided logistics and support from thailand for the shooting in cambodia, including all thai crew (over 35 positions) local talent (over 30 roles) and equipment.
the story is about a con-man (matt dillon) who travels to thailand and cambodia (he's also on the run from law enforcement in the u.s.) to collect his share in an insurance scam from his former partner (james caan), but discovers more than he bargained for.
throughout prep and shooting, matt dillon continually worked towards his goal of creating a realistic backdrop for both cambodia and thailand... and great effort was put into realizing that vision. matt's enthusiasm was contagious and despite the heat, dust and lack of filming infrastructure in cambodia, the cast and crew had a very good experience during the shooting of the film there. returning to thailand for the final filming there, it was like coming back to modern society... and the final stage of production in thailand went as smooth as ever.
city of ghosts was produced by kintop pictures in los angeles and is distributed through mgm. city of ghosts premiered first at the toronto film festival and shortly thereafter was released in theaters worldwide on april 26, 2003.
