Ice geishas and air conditioners on amazing sound stage in Bangkok
Ice geishas and a huge air conditioner in another innovative production with the director Matthias Zentner.
If Matthias Zentner is the director of a spot we know we have a demanding but always fascinating production ahead of us. His unique visual style demands a crew that is able to understand the depth of his vision and is committed to making his ideas a reality. This spot needed a sound stage, a talented art director who could design and oversee the construction of two sets and most importantly a choreographer and dance group knowledgeable in the ways of the Japanese fan dance. In all of this there is nothing that screams Thailand as a shooting location on the first glance.
Yet Thailand is nowadays one of the very few places that has great studio spaces, art directors and construction teams that can built beautiful but affordable sets, which fit the modern production budgets, and which has a plethora of talent that very few outside the country actually know about. So it did not come as a surprise to us that one of Japan's celebrated choreographers of traditional dance, Master Miwa, had opened a dance studio in Bangkok and was teaching his Thai and Japanese students exactly the dance we were looking for. Even better then that is that Master Miwa and Matthias Zentner share the passion for total perfection.
While a living room and an air conditioning set were being built and the dancers practiced their new choreography, wardrobe department was working on their outfits. The design was even more challenging then a normal kimono. 14 individual dresses, each with four different layers and a multitude of accessories needed to be constructed under a tight schedule. Kimono making is a special art and the team presented stunning results.
In the end, when all the different efforts came together, another of Matthias Zentner's amazing visions was transformed into a reality before our eyes.
