Feature Film Shooting Logistics

Weather

A lot of people believe that there are only really two seasons in Thailand: dry and wet. It's always hot. But officially, the year is broken down into thirds: cold, hot and rainy. In general, the cold season runs from December to March. The hot season encompasses April through July and the rainy season follows from August to November.

However, there are exceptions to these rules... on Southern Thailand's Andaman coast (Phuket/ Krabi area) for example the rainy season starts early around July, but just on the other side of the isthmus (Koh Samui area) the rainy season lags behind by a full three months.

In Chiang Mai, in the North, the rainy season is much shorter and not very strong. Living Films has shot several features through the rainy season (the easiest place to do that is in Chiang Mai... but we have also worked throughout the rainy season in Bangkok before. With some good planning and cover sets in place the rainy season need not change your production schedule. If a production starts on the tail end of the rainy season, it's important to front-load any construction and to have an A/B plan each day, at least at the beginning of shoot and until the monsoon period is over.
