Feature Film Shooting Logistics

Censorship

Thailand has State censorship and each feature film shooting here must first get their script approved with the Thai Film Board. Once the script is approved, there will also be one Film Board representative (i.e. censor) on set during all filming. The censor usually stays near the monitors and observes the shooting.

The censors are trying to safeguard the image and culture of Thailand. Their concern therefore lies foremost with the portrayal of things Thai. The list of sensitive subjects is topped by anything relating to the monarchy. This subject must therefore be approached with the utmost respect and delicacy. Other areas of concern encompass Buddhism (and other religions present in Thailand), Thai rituals and festivals and the Thai State and its agencies. The portrayal of sexuality and nudity can also cause concern. In general it can be said that if approached in a respectful manner, the censor and the Thai Film Board will not find fault. We have for example shot in many temples before, but we would never stage a violent action sequence in one.

If you are concerned about your project and wonder if it will pass the Thai film board, we are happy to help. One of the producers at Living Films is always available to read a script or synopsis and will, based on our past experience, give a first analysis of what content might be controversial or sensitive.
