With almost 10 million people, Bangkok dwarfs the next biggest city in Thailand. From skyscrapers to slums, ritzy malls to sprawling markets, ancient river boats to modern sky trains and sparkling temples to winding river canals, Bangkok has so many different looks. Like in a Gibson novel, it is a futuristic urban sprawl. Most people either really dig the city for its incredible sights and sounds or can't stand the absolute chaos. As far as filming goes, it's an incredible city full of contrasts: modern and traditional, opulent and run down, Asian and Western.
For a recent Toyota Scion commercial we were able to close down entire main streets of Bangkok from people and cars. For those of you who are familiar with Bangkok, we shut down the entire road between Paragon/ Discovery and Siam Square. Now, where else in the world could you pull that off? We hope that we're not asked to do that again! But if we are, we know we can manage it.
We have also shot Bangkok to double as other world cities. For Jackie Chan's "The Medallion" we shot Bangkok as Ireland. For our commercial of "Barak" we shot it for New York. For Nicolas Cage's "Bangkok Dangerous" we shot parts of Bangkok to be Prague.
Thailand's second biggest city, Chiang Mai, is also a great filming destination. The people of Chiang Mai are extremely nice, costs are low and logistics are relatively simple. Just 20 minutes outside of the city you find yourself in lush countryside. Whether you are the type of person who loves big cities or not, as a producer or director it will be hard not to like Thailand's urban offerings.
