Nomads

First major US television pilot to shoot in Thailand

Back to Text

We were very excited when we were contacted by the producer Judith Zaylor. She was planning to bring a TV series to Thailand that was being produced by CW TV (CBS & Warner Bros. TV) and Scott Free (Ridley Scott's production company.) It was a gamble. US TV hardly ever shoots outside America and no one had dared travel so far. To sell the idea to the studio she was coming here to shoot the sales piece for \"Nomads\". The series was to revolve around a group of hot, young CIA agents that used the international traveller community in Thailand as their cover.

In a six day shoot we were to capture all the exotic splendor of Thailand, with locations ranging from inner city Bangkok to countryside towns, temples, jungles and beaches. Because of the tight schedule all locations had to be in driving radius of no more then 30 min. from each other. This meant that we could not use Bangkok as a location, because all natural settings would have been to far away. We solved the issue, by basing in Hua Hin on the Western sea side of the Gulf of Siam. The resort town has enough density to double for the capital and lots of beautiful nature around it. It was a perfect choice. Everything we needed was just a stone throw away from each other. The sea side town also gave the cast and Western crew all the amenities they are used to. If the series would go into production we wanted to make sure to have a base that would sustain the needs of all the crew for a longer period of  time.

The shooting went smoothly and we finished on time and under budget. With the sales piece complete we went ahead to budget the whole first season of the show. Even though \"Nomads\" did not get picked up in the end, the production was a great learning experience for us. We honed our skills in the budgeting and executing of a TV series and are ready to go, if your should want to bring a show to Thailand and to us.
