Based on the Jules Verne novel starring Patrick Stewart & Kyle MacLachlan
Back to TextFrom July 2004 until January 2005 Living Films was the sole coordinating company for the Hallmark Mini-Series "Mysterious Island".
The film is a remake of the 1961 feature film based on Jules Verne's famous novel of the same name. It is a period movie from the American Civil War era. It tells the story of a disparate group of Americans who escape the war in a hot air balloon only to find themselves stranded on a tropical island where they are hunted by giant monsters. They will only survive if they can learn to work together.
The entire film was shot in Krabi, Southern Thailand, including the American civil war scenes... and the filming included construction of some amazing sets, CGI plate shooting, and spectacular caves, beaches and tropical scenery. The locations on Thailand's Andaman coast lent themselves well to the ‘pre-historic tropical look.'
The film stars Patrick Stewart of ‘Star Trek' and ‘X-Men' fame; Kyle MacLachlan from ‘Blue Velvet', ‘Twin Peaks' and ‘Dune'; and Gabriel Anwar from ‘Scent of a Woman'.
As has been the trend for Living Films over the last several years, we were able to use more Thai Department heads than ever before... bringing over only a handful of American and overseas crew. This saved costs and added to the production value. Thus, again, Living Films brought the film in on schedule and under budget. Mysterious Island premiered worldwide on September 17 2005.
